Success for Thomas

Congratulations to Thomas who attended the Rotary Club’s regional Disability Games at the weekend and won not one, but two events!

The Games took place in Lincoln with teams from all over the East Midlands comprising both Junior and Senior competitors. Thomas represented the Woodhall Warriors Team and had a wonderful day taking part in a variety of events. In swimming, Thomas competed in the 50m freestyle and won the Junior Boys Class in a time of 1 minute 12 secs, beating his own personal best. Thomas was also due to compete in the target shooting but this was cancelled due to high winds and so instead he was given the opportunity to try a range of the other sports on offer. He particularly enjoyed the challenge of weightlifting and was even more delighted to be declared the winner of the Junior Class having lifted 57% of his own bodyweight.

Thomas was presented with his weightlifting trophy by Paralympian Will Hipwell, who had travelled from his home in Cambridgeshire to attend the games. Thomas heard how Will started playing boccia in an after school club at the age of 10 and, after narrowly missing out on selection for the Rio Paralympics in 2016, was very proud to be selected to represent Great Britain in the Tokyo Paralympics last year.

Reflecting on his successful day, Thomas said: “If it wasn’t for Mrs Felton and Miss Britten, I wouldn’t even be a swimming champion."

Well done and thank you, Thomas, and great work Mrs Felton and Miss Britten in helping Thomas prepare for such events!
