Witham Cross Country

St Hugh's put on a great show at the Annual Witham Cross Country last week. We entered both girls and boys teams at U9 and U11 level with twenty-two of our pupils tackling the tough course.

The U9 race was 1.4km and our pupils arrived at Witham feeling well prepared and knowing they were more than capable of running this distance.  Both the girls and boys gave 100% and it was super to see how they supported one and other, particularly when half the team were Year 3 pupils!  A huge congratulations must go to Lucy and Elliot who finished in 5th and 4th place respectively. Both runners received medals for finishing in the top 6 from a vast field of athletes.  However, we must also congratulate every member of the team as it was a real team effort with runners earning points for St Hugh's.  We were delighted that our U9 girls team were placed 3rd overall.  This event is growing every year and for a small school, St Hugh's really impressed.

The U11 runners tackled a gruelling 2.8km this year but again, with lots of preparation in PE and running club, this did not phase the St Hugh's pupils.  William B led the St Hugh's pack initially but the others worked away and closed the gap eventually. The U11 girls team saw Aurora in the leading pack throughout and she did incredibly well to hold her position. Aurora was delighted to finish in the top 10, in 9th place.  The reminder of the team battled hard and managed to stay relatively close to one and other which meant we had some great finishing positions to ensure a good team performance. The squad were very proud to be crowned runners up in this category in an impressive 2nd place!
